I found “The Couple” to be an engaging, entertaining movie. The October 2006 movie is just the latest in what has almost become a genre in filmmaking: the efforts to prevent Jews from going to a concentration camp and to rescue them from Nazi Germany. I like the story of “The Couple.” It features Martin Landau as Joseph Krauzenberg, a favorite of mine since his early “Mission Impossible” TV series in the 1960s with his lovely wife Barbara Bain. Landau is believable as a wealthy man who manages to get passage to Palestine for his extended family when he bribes Himmler by giving him much of his wealth as well as his extensive art collection. . . . .

. . . At the story’s beginning Hans and Ingrid Vassman are a young “Aryan” couple who work for the Krauzenbergs. Since the Krauzenbergs are leaving for Palestine, the Vassmans are left on their own to face the increased Nazi pressure throughout the area. In reality the Vassmans are Jewish. They work with the Resistance broadcasting information by radio to help the Allies’ war effort. When the Vassmans reveal this to Krauzenberg he tries toarrange events so they can escape with his family.
