Recently I visited the local artsy video store and rented the DVD “Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg” It is a Swedish film in Swedish, but much of it was in German with English subtitles. Directed by Kjell Grede and released in 1990.
I was extremely impressed by it. I must confess my ignorance in that I had never heard of the movie or Mr. Wallenberg. The movie is based on a true story about a man, Mr. Wallenberg, who is a Swedish citizen and works in Hungary trying to rescue as many of the Jews in Hungary as possible. According to the some information he was responsible for saving 100,000 Jewish people from being sent to death camps.
. . . .
He worked with financial support of both Sweden and the War Refugee Board from the United States. According to one online source, The Jewish Virtual library, Wallenberg was trapped behind the Iron Curtain as the war came to an end. Check out the article at http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/wallenberg.html
The movie is reminiscent of “Schindler’s List” or perhaps I should say “Schindler’s List” is reminiscent of “Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg” since Schindler wasn’t released until 1993. I find that “Schindler’s List” is extremely derivative of “Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg”.
